By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Have a safe trip! Enjoy the study and the life in Taiwan!” said the Taiwan Embassy in Belize to the first set of Belizean students, who received Taiwan scholarships, as they left on Tuesday.

The Taiwan Embassy said the group consisted of 14 students who received 2022 Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) Scholarships.

This year, 38 students received scholarships from the ICDF and 14 were granted scholarships by the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). That makes a record number of 52 scholarships to study in Taiwanese universities.

“Ambassador David Kuan-Chou Chien was delighted to share this touching moment of joys and tears with the scholarship recipients and their families at the airport. They will be enjoying their brand new life in Taiwan!” said the Taiwan Embassy.

“The Taiwan MOFA and ICDF Scholarship Program is one of the most attractive and highly regarded scholarship programs in Belize today. There is a great demand for these scholarships,” said the Minister of Education Francis Fonseca at the orientation ceremony held last Saturday at the Biltmore Plaza.

Minister Fonseca thanked the Government of Taiwan and encouraged the students to take advantage of the great opportunity they have received.

“Please take full advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity. Remember at all times that you are representatives of Belize in Taiwan, Respect the people of Taiwan, respect their culture. Embrace the opportunity to learn a new language.

“Explore the beautiful country of Taiwan. Make new friends, so don’t just hang out with Belizeans. Make new friends, make new friends in Taiwan,” he encouraged them.

The orientation was being conducted by the Embassy of Taiwan and the Belize Taiwan Alumni Society.

Minister Fonseca and Ambassador Chien were joined at the orientation ceremony by Governor General Dame Froyla Tzalam, the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children Rossana Briceño, and the families of the students.

The rest of the students will be leaving soon.
